Conversion tracking tells Google Ads what a successful visit looks like, so you can stop judging campaigns by clicks alone. Without it, a campaign with cheap clicks and no sales can look better than a campaign with expensive clicks and real customers. Set it up before you spend serious money.
Decide what counts as a conversion
A conversion should be an action that matters to the business: a purchase, a booked appointment, a submitted contact form, a phone call of a useful length, or a trial sign-up. Do not count every page view or button click as a conversion, or your data will flatter every campaign. If a form submission is worth more than a newsletter sign-up, give them different values, or at least track them as separate actions.
The basic setup steps
- In Google Ads, create a conversion action, choose website as the source, and name it clearly, such as “Contact form submission”.
- Install the Google tag on every page of your site, using Google Tag Manager if you already use it, or the site-wide tag if you do not.
- Add the conversion event to the thank-you page or the form success action, so it fires only after a real submission.
- Use Google’s Tag Assistant or the tag’s built-in test tools to confirm the tag fires, then do a test submission yourself.
- Wait for real conversions to appear in the campaign report before switching to an automated bidding strategy.
Check the numbers, not just the setup
After a week, compare Google Ads conversions with your own records. Example: Google reports 20 form submissions, but your inbox shows 12 genuine enquiries and 8 spam or duplicate submissions. That gap matters. It means your real cost per genuine lead is higher than the report suggests, and it may change your budget decision. Clean up forms, add basic spam protection, and re-check. When the numbers are trustworthy, use them to judge bidding, ad copy, and budget choices.
