Quality Score is Google’s 1 to 10 rating of how relevant your ads, keywords, and landing pages are to the person searching. It matters because it affects your Ad Rank and what you pay per click. A higher Quality Score can help you rank higher and pay less, even against a competitor who bids more.
The three components
Quality Score is based on three factors. Expected click-through rate asks whether people are likely to click your ad for this keyword. Ad relevance asks whether your ad matches the intent behind the keyword. Landing page experience asks whether the page is relevant, useful, and easy to use on mobile and desktop. Google shows each factor as below average, average, or above average, which is more useful than the single number alone.
A simple auction example
Imagine Advertiser A bids $4.00 with a Quality Score of 8, and Advertiser B bids $5.00 with a Quality Score of 4. Using a simplified Ad Rank of bid times Quality Score, A scores 32 and B scores 20. A can win the better position and may pay less than B, even though B bid more. This is why chasing the top position by bidding alone is often expensive and inefficient.
How to improve each part
- Expected CTR: split ad groups so each group has tightly related keywords, and write ads that speak directly to that group.
- Ad relevance: include the main keyword in a headline, and do not send every keyword to your home page.
- Landing page: match the ad promise, load quickly, make the next step obvious, and remove distractions that do not help the visitor act.
Do not obsess over a single keyword’s score every day. Look for patterns: if a whole ad group is below average for landing page experience, fix the page. If many keywords are below average for ad relevance, restructure the groups. Then check cost per conversion, because that is the result that matters for your business.
